Why we’re here.
Be like Jesus. Become like Jesus. Do what Jesus would do.
At Common Ground Sea Point, we exist to make authentic followers of Jesus who love God and love people.
At Common Ground Sea Point, our vision is clear and transformative:
to make disciples who reflect Jesus in every aspect of life.
This involves three foundational pillars:
Presence – being with Jesus,
Formation – becoming like Jesus, and
Mission – doing what Jesus would do.
This vision shapes our approach to worship, community, and mission. Discipleship is a lifelong journey of growth, reflection, and action, guided by these principles.
Encountering the presence of God
We are made for intimacy with God. We cultivate this through intentional spiritual practices that draw us closer to Him. Encountering God’s presence isn’t a one-time experience but a lifestyle of abiding—living in deep relationship with Him through these rhythms.
Becoming like Jesus through the Gospel
Discipleship is about formation—being shaped by Jesus, into His character, for His kingdom. Through scripture, community, and spiritual practices, we grow in Christlikeness.
Living on Sacrificial Mission
Jesus came not to be served, but to serve. As His disciples, we live for the good of others—loving our neighbours, seeking justice, the welfare of our city and sharing the gospel in word and deed.
Being an Embodied Community
The church is family. We commit to one another in love and truth, practising presence, accountability, spiritual transformation, and radical hospitality in a world of isolation.
What we value.
Hope Over Hype: The gospel is central to all we do, providing the lasting hope and grace only Christ can give. We remain authentic and grounded, serving an extraordinary God as ordinary people.
Conviction Over Comfort: We uphold the truth and authority of God’s Word, even when it challenges cultural norms, believing that life according to His Word is the best way to live.
Commitment Over Convenience: As God’s family, we are committed to loving and serving one another sacrificially, encouraging each other to grow closer to God.
Contributors Over Consumers: We affirm the "priesthood of all believers," recognizing that everyone has God-given gifts to contribute to His family. We encourage active participation rather than reliance on a few leaders.
Our Story.
“From the suburbs to the Atlantic Seaboard via the inner city.”
Common Ground Sea Point started out in the inner city as the first multi-site congregation of Common Ground church in Rondebosch, back in 2009. With a heart for the inner city, Christo and Elise Bredenkamp planted this congregation at the St. Stephens church building on Bree Street on Sunday evenings. As we grew (and grew older) we moved to Green Point and launched a family-friendly morning meeting. By then Kevin Murphy together with his wife, Claire, was lead pastor and in 2017 we planted a new evening congregation in the heart of Sea Point, meeting in our current venue at the Sea Point Congregational Church.
In 2018, after Kevin and Claire felt called by God to a church in Hong Kong, Paul Maughan, together with his wife Lee-Ann from the original Rondebosch Common Ground, took over as lead pastor. As our relationship with the Sea Point Congregational Church strengthened, we felt God lead us in early 2021 to move our morning meeting to Sea Point as well, becoming Common Ground Church Sea Point.
This move has brought a new sense of life and mission as we sink our roots into the Atlantic Seaboard.
